Senator Jay Bulworth is up for re-election, but has lost all hope and wants to end his life. He hires a hitman to kill him, but then starts to speak his mind and tell the truth during his campaign. This unexpected honesty and authenticity resonates with the public and revitalizes his campaign, but also puts him in danger. Along the way, he meets Nina, a young African American woman, and they develop a complicated relationship.
